In the 2007 NFL draft the Oakland Raiders were on the clock with the first selection. Following the franchises worst season since 1962.
Entering the 2007 NFL draft Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders were in need of an offensive resurgence and were said to be targeting a playmaker on that side of the ball to boost its anemic offense. The options on the board for Oakland were future perennial pro bowlers, Calvin Johnson, and Adrian Peterson. Rather than go with the highest graded wide receiver and running back in Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson, the Raiders selected LSU standout Russell who only in the few months prior had earned 1st pick worthy status.
After the JaMarcus Russell selection, a hold out would eventually slow his progression as a quarterback. Three seasons of below par play at QB mixed with maturity questions were enough for the Raiders to cut their ties with Russell in 2009.
