A mother was charged with child neglect Monday after police said she left her 19-month-old toddler inside a locked, running car during a shopping trip.
Vita Abramenkova, 35, of Clearwater told police that she didn’t want to disturb her sleeping child when she pulled into the Target parking lot at 7150 U.S. Highway 19 N. Instead she left her in the car for approximately 40 minutes with the air conditioner turned on low according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Just before 5 p.m., a paramedic who happened to be in the parking lot at the time called police when he noticed the toddler sitting in the car alone. Police arrived at the scene, and the toddler was released to her father. Abramenkova admitted to the offense, and was subsequently arrested on the charge of child neglect. She was then transported to the Pinellas County Jail. The charges were determined based on the totality of the circumstances to include the temperature outside, the time of day, the age of the child and the incident location.
Abramenkova was charged with child neglect and taken to the Pinellas County Jail, where she was being held on $2,000 bail. She was released early Tuesday morning. Authorities say it was about 92 degrees and humid outside when the mother left her in the car.
