Production Budget – $185–200,000,000

Worldwide Gross – $197,687,603

Estimated Loss – $86,156,199—101,156,199

Jack the Giant Slayer’s box office numbers nearly surpassed it’s estimated budget, however, extra costs involved,  such as marketing, can reach upwards 100M dollars. With the added cost of marketing, it’s likely this film performed well under studios expectations.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film was expected to lose between $125M and $140M for production company, Legendary Pictures.

The reviews on Jack the Giant Slayer were mixed, with critics citing the lack of a quality story to support the visual effects, which may have done Jack the Giant Slayer in. Variety’s, Justin Chang, was quoted as saying, “Jack the Giant Slayer feels, unsurprisingly, like an attempt to cash in on a trend, recycling storybook characters, situations and battle sequences to mechanical and wearyingly predictable effect” (Wikipedia).
