Going in to the final round at Bridgestone the story should be about Rory McIlroy creaping up on Sergio Garcia. It would be if it wasn’t for Bubba Watson.
The story of the day should be about Rory McIlroy closing Sergio Garcia’s lead from an almost insurmountable six shot lead back down to three–and it is. When McIlroy hit a 35-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole to finish the day with a 3-under 67 Garcia all but lost any feeling of comfort heading in to the final round.
However, as great a story as the potential showdown between Garcia and McIlroy is Bubba Watson’s day can’t go ignored.
It was actually his highest scoring round of the tournament. After opening with a 69 he hit a 70 on Friday to stay at 1-under for the tournament, but with a 73 on Saturday he fell to 2-over and is in a tie for 42nd.
So how can that kind of day be newsworthy? On the 16th hole–a 667 yard par 5–he crushed a monster 424 yard drive!
An incredible drive like that is one fans are always going to be interested in. Of course it would have been better if he had been able to birdie the hole rather than bogey it….
