It has already been more than a year since the world learned that Batman and Superman were going to be appearing on the silver screen together for the very first time, and it is still going to be another 19 months or so until we actually get to see Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (cue Comic Book Guy’s “Worst! Title! Ever!” line). Those who are good at doing impatient nerd math are probably saying “wait…19 months, but it was supposed to 21 months from now!” That would be correct, but once again, the Batman V Superman release date has changed.
According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. and DC have decided to go with a March 25, 2016 release date as opposed to the May 6, 2016 release date, which was originally supposed to be a summer 2015 released date. Do these moves signal a problem with the films production? Probably not. It is most likely box office strategy. The studio clearly has confidence in the movie seeing as they’ve already announced nine other released dates for as of yet untitled DC Comics projects.
The film was slated to open against Marvel’s Captain America 3 and there was quite a bit of speculation that one of the studios would budge and shift their released date. Being that Marvel just destroyed at the box office with an unknown property like Guardians of the Galaxy, they proved their name is money in the bank so Warner Bros. and DC likely made a good decision shifting the release date.
The hype surrounding Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice has been nothing shy of what you would expect when a guy like Zack Snyder says he’s going to make a movie where two of history’s most popular and beloved superheroes fight. That being said, the expectations are monstrously high for this film and anything shy of “The Biggest Movie Ever,” simply won’t cut it. The studio is looking to build their own universe on the back of this blockbuster so they need to do everything they can to ensure its success.
The March release date gives the movie room to breathe, but this is absolutely supposed to be a summer blockbuster and March is far from the prime time summer box office. Though, certain movies have been able to have a lot of success outside of a summer release. Earlier this year Captain America: The Winter Soldier had one of the biggest opening weekends of the year with an April release. The first Hunger Games also opened in March back in 2012 and absolutely crushed at the box office as well, so it could ultimately prove to be a good decision.
The point is, this film has to succeed on every level. It needs to be a critical success to some degree in order to get the masses on its side and help the future of the franchise. It needs to bring in massive numbers at the box office in order to prove the name of the brand and it needs to impress fans enough to come back. The loyalty is key. This isn’t just one movie, the future of a massive franchise is at risk. If nothing else, this release date change shows that the studio is taking that seriously. Also, now fans will get to see it at least a couple of months sooner than expected.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently set to open on March 25, 2016 and stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, Laurence Fishburne as Perry white and Diane Lane as Martha Kent.
