If Guardians of the Galaxy taught us anything, it’s that the Marvel brand is strong enough to carry even a relatively unknown property to incredible cinematic success. That would explain why the not so mainstream Doctor Strange movie is getting so much attention. Scott Derrickson is set to direct and it looks like Joaquin Phoenix IS playing Doctor Strange after all.
Just before San Diego Comic-Con this year rumors started circulating regarding Phoenix’s involvement with the project and many expected that there was going to be an announcement made during the convention. Nothing came of it and fans have been sitting in limbo ever since.
However, Collider recently reported that the Academy Award nominated actor is in final talks to play the part of The Sorcerer Supreme in the upcoming Marvel Studios project. There was concern that an actor such as Phoenix wouldn’t want to sign one of Marvel’s notoriously long contracts (typically for six movies or more) but that is likely why it is taking so long to get the deal done.
“his contract is essentially at the 1 yard line, about to pass into the endzone,” Collider’s source said.
It seemed initially very unlikely that Phoenix would actually play the part. One, because he seems to be avoiding the blockbuster route these days and two, because he likely wouldn’t want to be tied down with a long term franchise contract. In spite of that, it looks like Kevin Feige and company figured out a way to sway him.
Other actors that were rumored to be considered for the part included Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Johnny Depp and a handful of others.
Production is scheduled to start on the Doctor Strange movie early next year with an anticipated 2016 release date. Expect an announcement soon.
