Without further delay, ALW presents College Game Day in Pictures…Week 3!
(9) USC 31 vs. Boston College 37
The upset of the day goes to Boston College who turned the statisticians on their heads as they overcame only a 9% chance to win into a storming the fields victory over a top ten team. Fans stormed the field to celebrate Boston College’s first victory over a top 10 team since it beat West Virginia in 2004.
East Carolina 28 vs. (17) Virginia Tech 21
Maybe not the highest profile upset of Week 3, but probably the most surprising upset of the weekend. East Carolina stunned the Hokies on the Tech homefield, beating a ranked team on the road for the first time since 1999 against then 12th ranked Miami. Maybe the Hokies had a post-win hangover from their victory over then 8th ranked Ohio State the week prior. The Pirates jumped out to a massive lead but the Hokies overcame a three touchdown deficit to make the game close.
(21) Louisville 21 vs. Virginia 23
Charlottesville, Virginia is one of the most beautiful places in America but football success has not necessarily followed. Probably one of the most entertaining endings in Week 3. Henry Coley almost cost the Cavaliers the win as penalties against the senior linebacker kept Louisville drives alive in the second half, each ending in a touchdown. Then, a fumbled punt by the Cardinals changed everything. Already in field goal range after the fumble recovery, Virginia put the game away. Bobby Petrino was rumored to have ridden off into the sunset on a motorcycle with…actually, no that didn’t happen.
Iowa State 20 vs. Iowa 17
We love rivalry games and this one is always good no matter the status of the individual team. Iowa State kicked a 42-yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining to win the game. Iowa State tried to give this game away numerous times in the first half. The Cyclones redeemed themselves in the second half holding Iowa to only a field goal.
(6) Georgia 35 vs. (24) South Carolina 38
The game of the day from the SEC which was delayed by rain for a significant period of time. Of all things, a defensive stand by South Carolina on their 4-yard line won the game. An unexpected way for the Gamecocks to win after getting thrashed by the Aggies in its opening game. Georgia didn’t help themselves with an untimely intentional grounding and a missed chip-shot fieldgoal from 28 yards out. In out opinion, the story of this game is not South Carolina but it is that Georgia is not the favorite that everyone expected. Ohh, and South Carolina girls are smoking hot. Just saying.
