The Marvel Cinematic Universe is wrapping up it’s second phase of films with Avengers: Age of Ultron due out in May to round it out after the massive success that was Guardians of the Galaxy. With that, they will be looking ahead to phase 3 which will include Ant-Man and some other key, new characters. Most notably, The Sorcerer Supreme aka Doctor Strange will be one of the major new additions to the MCU. But with Joaquin Phoenix dropping out of contention for the lead, here are 5 actors who may wind up in the role.
The internet ran wild with speculation when this photo surfaced. Welsh actor Luke Evans is standing right beside Captain American himself, Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner who portrays Hawkeye in the Marvel films. “What’s he doing there?” thought, everyone. Luke Evans is willing to do a franchise (see, The Hobbit), has the acting chops to pull of the role and the looks to pull it off. He is a bit young (35) but that could work better in the long run. No doubt, Marvel has probably got his number in their Rolodex.
Hugh Laurie has been a bit quiet since House went off the air, but that show alone proved he has what it takes for the part. House borders on being the origin story for Strange, who is a gifted surgeon that loses the use of his hands in an accident and then seeks out magic to fix himself. Laurie would be solid, however, he is already 55 years old and with Marvel’s notoriously long contracts, that cold be a hitch in that actually happening.
Speaking of great actors who have already played doctors, former Doctor Who star Matt Smith will be taking America by storm with roles in the upcoming Terminator: Genisys as well as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Smith already has the hearts of millions in the nerd community and would likely be an instantly popular choice for the part. He is only 31 though, which is definitely young considering the character but depending on the films direction, that could work out. What Chris Pratt was to comedy before taking over as Star Lord, Smith is exactly that to sci-fi right now and could be taking a major step should Kevin Feige and co. give him a call.
There is probably no other actor on this list that seems more perfect for the role than Adrien Brody, on paper anyway. He looks exactly like Stephen Strange, he is the perfect age (41), he has the star power Marvel wants to help sell the movie to the masses and he currently isn’t all that busy. In recent years, Brody has seemed to be more choosy about what he’s working on but a major franchise could be tempting for the Academy Award winner. If he doesn’t at least get a screen test, something is wrong with the world.
Now, for the completely obvious but completely logical choice for the role; Mr. Ethan Hawke. Sinister director Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange and it just so happens that Hawke was the lead actor in that particular film. There is a lot of speculation that he is the current front runner for the role already, but that appears to be just speculation. At 43 years old, he is right in the sweet spot age wise and again, has the look to fill the shoes of The Sorcerer Supreme. Hawke also seems like the type of guy who would be willing to sign a multi-picture deal as well. It just seems to make a lot of sense.
No matter who is cast as Doctor Strange, be prepared for a casting announcement sometime soon since the film will be shooting next year.
