It’s been almost 30 years since Paul Reubens and Tim Burton teamed up for the one-of-a-kind comedy cult classic Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure (which, I can personally confirm, still plays great in 2014). A new sequel has been rumored for years now, and on the Tonight Show last night, Reubens confirmed that he’ll once again be donning his red bowtie.
As previously reported, Judd Apatow will produce the movie, and a director has been chosen, though Reubens said he can’t yet announce his name. (He said we should expect a “huge announcement” next week.) There’s no word yet on whether the movie will also see the return of his bicycle.
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure isn’t over just yet: Paul Reubens went on The Tonight Show Wednesday evening and confirmed another Pee-wee movie is in the works.
Reubens starred as the lovably weird Pee-wee Herman in the 1986 movie, Tim Burton’s first.
He went on to reprise the role in Pee-wee’s Playhouse, a TV series that ran from 1986 to 1990 and featured appearances by now-famous actors like Black-ish’s Laurence Fishburne and.
Orange is the New Black‘s Natasha Lyonne. But now, he’s returning to the big screen.
While it was already announced years ago that there would be another Pee-wee movie, there hasn’t been much buzz about it as of late — until now. “There is going to be [a movie],” Reubens told Jimmy Fallon. “And I was hoping that I could make this huge announcement tonight, but it’s a week away, I think, from being announced.”
Reubens confirmed Judd Apatow will be producing and they’ll start shooting in February, but the director’s identity won’t be revealed until the official announcement—although Fallon did try to get an answer out of him anyway: “Is it Steven Spielberg?” Fallon asked.
“Steven Spielberg!” Reubens responded while shaking his head.
