The Virgin Galactic SpaceShip Two exploded over the desert Friday, killing 1 of the pilots and injuring the other. The rocket ship took off over the Mojave desert, and exploded in mid flight before crashing to the ground. This may cause a major delay for commercial space travel, since the company had hoped to use this very same ship to take paying passengers up into space as early as 2015. The loss of the spacecraft, and the concerns for safety that this crash causes may slow the acceptance of this program by a long shot.

Virgin has posted online about the success of the SpaceShip Two program after the ship took off from it’s carrier plane under its own power. Unfortunately, only minutes into the flight something tragic happened that caused part of the ship to explode. The resulting damage scattered wreckage across the Mojave desert in California. This was the first time that the spaceship had flown under its own power, using a newer type of engine than was previously used in the past.
Virgin Galactic had been hoping to expedite the process of getting the FAA to approve passenger trips into space, but that will probably require a special investigation into the cause of this crash first. Passengers have supposedly lined up on lists already to pay an estimated $200,000 each for the opportunity to fly into space for a few minutes. That level of expense will likely not last for long before the costs eventually reach more reasonable budgets. It is expected that the pioneers will pay a premium price to be among the few that have had the privilege of leaving planet Earth, even if for a brief moment.
