Health officials in the US claim that circumcision, which is a controversial procedure, could actually have many benefits- so much so, that they outweigh the risks associated with it. Infact, they also claim that parents of baby boys must consider it, and health insurers must pay for it too.
A set of guidelines on circumcision have been released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which will receive public comments for 45 days before finalization.
By far, these are the first federal guidelines that focus on circumcision- the CDC had already started working on these guidelines around 7 years. A cluster of certain influential studies in Africa which claimed that circumcision might stop the spread of AIDS virus seems to have influenced this formation of guidelines.
Circumcision is a procedure that involves cutting away foreskin around the tip of the penis- it is known that germs tend to grow below the foreskin. The officials believe that this procedure may lower male’s risk of being infected by sexually transmitted diseases, urinary tract infections and even penile cancer.
