Van Nuys, California – Police officers assisted with seizing an 8-foot alligator from a Los Angeles area family who kept him in the back yard for 40 years. The reptile was getting old, and was being kept outside in a large box to keep it contained. Police determined that the alligator was kept by the family since it was just a baby, and its age was estimated at 40 years.

A concerned neighbor called the cops after spotting the alligator in their neighbors backyard. Los Angeles is far from the natural habitat of alligators, so it was quite an unusual site. When cops arrived they asked the home owners if they could search the back yard. They were initially refused to do so by the home owner, but the cops went to a judge to get a proper search warrant.
Another possible illegal animal was spotted on the property and other officials were called to investigate the species. The other animal in question was some sort of tortoise, which could be illegal to possess in California without a proper permit.
The owners of the 8 foot alligator claimed that they had always cared for the alligator, and that there were never any incidents with it. Because the home owner was getting older as well, they were losing their capacity to care for the large lizard. They claimed that they had contacted the zoo to attempt to get rid of it, but that did not get anywhere. Had the zoo been made aware of the situation sooner, they may have dispatched authorities to the home to have the animal seized. In the meantime, the zoo is housing the alligator until a permanent home can be found for it. The city is working to determine which criminal charges they plan to pursue in court against the owner.
