Welcome to the newest edition of The Why. “Why do girls like horses?” you ask? Good question. (Besides, it beats answering the question: “Why does my girlfriend tell me not to lick her armpits?” Maybe she’s ticklish? Maybe she doesn’t think her Secret deodorant tastes all that yummy?)
Why do girls like horses? Actually according to The Kitchen Sisters of NPR fame, folks have been speculating “about why girls love horses” for decades. According to Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture, girls express their own “power” by “identifying with these dynamic, strong animals.” They are “active . . . sources of power and motion . . .”
Horsewoman Dominique Gioia Scaggs also commented on the power to NPR: “To be in control, or out of control, on a galloping horse is a wild feeling. You are one with it. You just feel the power underneath you. And that’s part of the attraction.”
Champion barrel racer Caterina Tadlock stated that one of her old teachers thought he knew why girls like horses. “His theory was that it was similar to taming a bad boy.” She didn’t agree with that theory and wrote a paper titled “The Mystery of Girls and Horses” which she posted on her sister’s website, The Ultimate Horse Site.
She believes girls like horses because they like the idea of “achieving the skills and level of competence it takes to care for a horse — the currying, the cleaning of the hooves, the mucking of stalls, the brushing of the mane and tail, the feeding of the horse — as well as to the nurturing aspects of the work.”
Let’s not forget posters like “Sabrina” who agrees that horses are “extremely powerful. Riding an animal with so much power, strength and speed is both dangerous and thrilling. It’s a rush!”
She adds: “You get a . . . social satisfaction and feeling of camaraderie with your horse . . . there is a challenge in learning to understand each other’s language. A lot of people, including myself, love the challenge that comes with communicating with an animal, and the joy of a moment when you finally understand each other! You have to develop a whole new set of skills when learning to work with your horse.”
She concludes that another reason girls like horses “is that you get to play dress up with your horse. Choosing tack, grooming and braiding is just as fun for me as the riding part.”
Finally, Yahoo Poster “Brett Harrison” had yet another idea why girls like horses. He claims “one reason that women love horses is this: When they ride one (especially bareback) it is possible for them to . . . orgasm.” Hence the terms “cowgirl position” and songs like “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)”.
