Bronx, New York – Call it a stroke of bad luck, or call it fate, a woman from the Bronx was left brain dead after the ambulance carrying her from the hospital crashed into a utility pole. Janet Hickey, 60, was on her way from the hospital to a care facility after having survived a 7 hour long brain surgery to remove a tumor. Surgeons who treated her fully expected for her to make a good recovery, and she was even expected to regain her fine motor skills and walk again shortly after her surgery.
Janet Hickey Survives 7 Hour Brain Surgery But Ambulance Crash Leaves Her Brain Dead
On Wednesday, the ambulance transporting Janet Hickey from one hospital to another slid off the road and struck a utility pole. The accident itself might not have been so bad, if Janet’s stretcher had been properly strapped into the ambulance. An early investigation determined that the staff in charge of transporting her to the new hospital had not taken the necessary precautions to secure her stretcher. This caused her body to get tossed violently around the ambulance during the crash, which further damaged Hickey’s fragile brain.
She was taken to a hospital and placed on life support while doctors spent the next days determining the likelihood of her recovery. This time, Janet’s fate was not so fortunate.
The family decided that they will support doctor’s suggestions to remove her from life support, and had her removed from it on Sunday. Sadly she went from being a very lucky survivor who was awake and conscious to being the victim of neglect at the hands of the medical staff responsible for transporting her.
This accident highlights some of the dangers of the privatized medical industry, in which this fragile elderly woman died due to the neglect of a young staff worker who did not take his job seriously enough to do it properly. There is no word on what type of legal action the Hickey family plans to pursue against the hospital, and the medicla transportation company who was ultimately responsible for her death.
