With millions of Americans attempting to lose weight, it should be no surprise there are currently over two dozen commercial weight loss programs available. Only a few, however, are effective.
Lead author Dr. Kimberly Gudzune, assistant professor of medicine and weight loss specialist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in Baltimore, Maryland, thought that with so many people trying to diet and lose weight, someone needed to check on the effectiveness of these weight loss programs.
Several of the diet and weight-loss programs have been previously criticized by other health experts because of the questionable reasoning behind their strategies. Indeed, various sources indicate that there is not a lot of scientific evidence to support their effectiveness.
Gudzune stated: We still don’t know whether a lot of these programs work. I had hoped that more rigorous scientific studies of these programs had been done.”
Thus the investigative team decided to analyze 4,200 studies concerning different diet regimens and weight loss programs. Only a few demonstrated a sustained loss of weight over a one-year period.
