Welcome to the newest edition of The Why. “Why shouldn’t you use a hot photo for your online dating profile?” you ask? Good question. Timely too. (Besides, it helps us avoid embarrassing questions about what exercises one must do to accomplish certain positions in the Kama Sutra.)
Since your rather reclusive writer rarely gets out from under his laptop, we’ll be consulting experts as always to confirm his beliefs and offer additional insights. So why shouldn’t you use a hot photo for your online dating profile?
In the words of Billy Joel it’s “a matter of trust.” Sources at ABC’s KNVU AM radio confirmed this stating that “the perfect photo for your online dating profile . . . might be “too hot to trust.”
A research team at the University of Connecticut ran an experiment to learn how folks judged each other based solely on their online dating profile pics. They showed 671 participants with a single picture that was either enhanced or casual and of a guy or a gal.
The investigative team discovered that guys were less likely to trust gals who posted an “enhanced” picture with lighting, good angles and make-up. Rory McGloin, a communications professor at UConn and lead study author, stated that while this did not stop all the men from wanting to date the lady “they didn’t trust her.”
Women, however, reportedly found guys with enhanced profile pics to be “more trustworthy.” McGloin stated: “Attractiveness of the male served as a halo. Once they found him to be attractive, they assumed all of the other traits were good as well.” McGloin also pointed out that in the case of this study the individual subjects were “fearless” because their actions had no consequences
Nevertheless, while using a hot photo for your online profile might have once worked for men, now that the results of this study have been released women might be more cautious and actually avoid men with a hot photo for their online profiles because they could very well turn out to be too good to be true.
