Officers responded to a call around 2:15 p.m. and made initial contact with the man, however the circumstances of the shooting weren’t immediately clear.
Reports later from the Portland Police Bureau said the individual who had been cutting himself fled from his initial location. Soon after, a woman in the same area reported to police that a man with a knife broke into her home, where she was with two young children.
The woman and two children were able to flee the home and officers began to set up containment at the location. At that time, the shooting is reported to have taken place.
Krystina Cruikshank, 33, lives in the area and said she had just arrived home from a graveyard shift when she heard both a woman and a man screaming, Oregon Live reported.
She said she hear the man yelling obscenities at police officers and heard what she counted as five gunshots. “It’s incredibly nerve racking.”
Portland police say officers were able to quickly render medical assistance after the shooting, and the subject was transported to a hospital. The individual’s medical condition and age are not immediately known.
The name of the man was not immediately released.
Additional information is not immediately available. A police spokesman is expected to provide more details about the incident Sunday evening.
