A Massachusetts man shot in the head inside Hope Cemetery Thursday afternoon has died, becoming the city’s fourth homicide this year, police said.
The 22-year-old man, who has been identified as David Luyando died at UMass Medical Center-University Campus Thursday evening.
As Worcester Magazine first reported, police responded around 3:30 pm. to the report of a man transporting another man, who had been shot in the head, to the hospital. The man told police he and his friend were visiting the grave of a deceased friend at Hope Cemetery when a vehicle drove by and one of the men inside the car began shooting at them.
The man first took his friend to UMass Memorial Hospital however due to the severity of his injuries, police said he was transported to UMass Medical Center.
Several people gathered inside and outside the emergency room at the hospital, and three police cruisers could be seen parked outside the entrance.
The investigator who responded to Hope Cemetery established a crime scene after discovering the shell casings in a section of the cemetery Worcester Magazine reported.
There were reports over the police scanner of a newer-model, silver, four-door sedan seen leaving the cemetery. A white woman reportedly was driving the vehicle and there were four or five occupants in the car. A man sitting in the rear passenger side seat allegedly had a gun, according to scanner transmission.
An emergency dispatcher also said someone called saying there might be video of the incident.
The victim was the third person to be killed by gunfire in Worcester this year.
The investigation is still ongoing.
