Welcome to the newest edition of The Why. “Why is Star Wars’ Hans Solo the perfect character?” Good question. (OK, it’s a little geeky but it beats answering those questions about some of your more personal peccadilloes. Seriously? We thought “The Dirty Chewbacca” was just the next episode in the ever-expanding Star Wars franchise, mmmkay?)
Yours truly is more of a Star Trek man than a Star Wars guy. Still, with the Star Wars folks in full gear with the upcoming Episode 7 now seemed like a great time to address a Star Wars question.
After all, according to guest speaker Dirk Libbey, contributor to CinemaBlend, the franchise “is moving full steam ahead not only” on the above-mentioned episode but other projects as well. “Plans are also moving forward with all of the ‘Anthology; projects including a starring role for everybody’s favorite smuggler, Han Solo.”
Which brings us neatly to our question of the day: Why is Star Wars‘ Hans Solo the perfect character? Libbey believes Solo is the perfect character because people, including director Chris Miller, can “say enough good things about Solo.”
Libbey believes, as does Miller, who will be co-directing the Han Solo film that the character inspires excitement. Miller told IGN in a recent interview:
“I could talk to you for a day about why he is the perfect blend of rogue-ish cowboy . . . Morally ambiguous, but has a clear moral compass. He’s funny; he’s off the cuff. When I was a kid on the playground, fights were about who got to play Han Solo. He’s just one of the best characters ever created.”
Libbey adds: “Solo really is a special character in the Star Wars universe. While the prequel films had their Jedis, princesses, aliens, and droids, just as the original trilogy did, they were utterly lacking in any sort of Han Solo-like character. I’m not saying that was the (only) reason the prequels were not as good. But I am saying that was one of the reasons the prequels didn’t work.”
He concludes that Hans Solo is the perfect character because he has a small degree of mystery to him and is “that perfect blend of rouge and cowboy that Miller references. . . (and) “he’s the type of guy that shoots first.”
Why is Star Wars‘ Hans Solo the perfect character? Now you know.
