According to the Daily Mail, a 6 -year-old boy was attacked by a shark who took three-quarters off his thigh in Florida on Tuesday. Nickolaus Bieber, from Palm Beach Gardens, was swimming near the Juno Beach Pier in Jupiter in the early evening when he saw the shark thrashing in the water. The shark then lunged at Bieber and took a huge chunk of his thigh.

According to a witness who saw the incident, “He was bleeding so much that we couldn’t tell which part of the body was bit.” Christina Bieber, Nickolaus’ mother, initially thought were son was stung stung by a Portuguese man-of-war when he turned to her and exclaimed that something bit him. Once she saw the severity of the injury, she wrapped a towel around her son’s leg where a the bite occurred while passers by called 911.

In the 911 that was recently released to the public, the caller who witnessed the horrific incident describes the bite as a “pretty big gash” and also states that the boy was “bleeding pretty bad.” According to the report, the bite to Nickolaus’ upper back thigh was about 12 inches in circumference, covering about three-quarters of his right thigh and came very close to the bone.

Miraculously, the shark managed to avoid major vessels and nerves, according to surgeons at St. Mary’s Medical Center.  The plastic surgeons replaced the missing tissue, which has so far been successfully taken. Dr Michael West, a trauma surgeon, said “He’s a very luck individual. This was a significant shark bite when compared to the size of his leg.”

Doctors are hopeful for Bieber’s full recovery, and even say he can be walking again within a month.
