Rob Hammer is an incredibly talented photographer based out of San Diego, California. His work ranges from shooting superstar athletes to taking on more intimate and personal projects such as ‘The Barber Shops of America’ where he showcases the beauty and old school nature and simplicity of a true American icon: the barber shop.
Launched just two days ago, Rob Hammer’s Kickstarter project ‘The Barber Shops of America’ has received 21 backers and funded over $2,000 of the $45,000 goal necessary to get the project moving ahead at full speed. The project, which has 28 days left to receive full funding, is a photo book and video documentary of old school barber shops and barbers from all across the USA.
In an excerpt from his Kickstarter page, Rob writes,
“A real barber shop is a very special piece of America. A place with true character that has been defined over the years, by the man with the scissors and his loyal patrons. The walls are covered with memorabilia and pictures inspired by the small town it was built around. Upon entering, you can feel the history of each shop and can only imagine the stories each barber could share.”
It is not often that I am so moved by someone or something, but Rob Hammer has certainly inspired me. His work is unlike anything I’ve yet encountered, and his demeanor is that of a genuine individual whose convictions are unwavering. His passion is strongly reflected in the carefully constructed beauty that is apparent in his work.
