Catherine McCann Had Maggot Infestation Removed From Her Ear Canal. The family of 92-year-old, Catherine McCann was shocked when they found out she was discovered to have 57 maggots living inside of her ear canal.
Catherine McCann is suffering from Alzheimer’s, living in nursing home care because she is unable to speak or care for herself.
CBS Chicago reports her family has been paying $10,000 a month for skilled nursing home care only to have the unthinkable happen.
Her family is now suing the Lutheran Home for the Aged in Arlington Heights, Ill., after doctors discovered and removed 57 maggots from her ear. The maggots are believed to have ended up in her ear after an insect flew into her ear, and laid eggs.
McCann’s husband John McCann, 88 had paid the home $270,000 to care for his wife.
An expert concluded the maggots had been in her ear for 2 ½ to 3 days. McCann has an enlarged ear canal which requires her to receive ear drops. The family is questioning whether or not she received those ear drops.
CBS Chicago reported that the Illinois Department of Public Health found no violations in this case.
