According to Reuters, a masked gunman killed 12 people at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie in a suburb of Denver early on Friday, sparking pandemonium when he hurled a gas canister into the auditorium and opened fire on moviegoers. The attack occurred at the showing of the most recent and last release of the Batman franchise, “The Dark Knight Rises,” in a mall around the Aurora suburb.

According to reports, nearly 71 others, including children, were also wounded in the incident. Hospital officials states that some of the wounded were treated for the effects of tear gas. In a statement to the press, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said, “This is a horrific event.” The suspect was eventually caught and taken into custody in the parking lot behind the theater.

Witness and police accounts of the incident say that the gunman was stationed at the front of the theater during the movie and released a canister which let out a hissing sound before gunfire erupted. Dozens of police were already at the scene and evacuated the area, checking for explosives that may have been lying around the scene. According to one witness account, “the exit door opened and something was thrown across the screen, and then shooting started. It was chaos.”

President Barack Obama was notified about the incident by his homeland security adviser, John Brennan Friday morning, and made a statement to the American people, “Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family.”
