Facekini is the latest craze in China as swimmers cover up to avoid a tan. In the United States being tan is in and people pay money to get a the bronze color from maximum UV rays. But in China people go to great lengths paying money to avoid a tan.
Many in China are turning to what is called a “Facekini”. A mask that serves as a UV protector covering your entire head except your mouth, eyes, and nose.
In an interview with MSNBC “I myself don’t mind getting tanned, but I can see why pale skin is attractive,” Alina Zhao, a college student in the U.S. who grew up in Zhejiang, China, said.
“It definitely has to do with the history of China, which is largely an agricultural society,” she added. “Getting tanned means you work outside in the fields a lot, so skin color is like an indicator of your social status. The fairer you are, the wealthier or more respected you seem.”
The UV protecting mask comes in all colors, and designs take a look at Taobao.com to see just how many kinds they have.
