Shot in head with spear

Jackson Memorial Hospital

Florida teen Yasser Lopez, 16, is recovering from a traumatic spear fishing trip where he was accidentally shot in the skull by a friend.

The teen who is at University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital is now back to speaking again after a 3 hour operation.

Doctors say the spear entered his skull just above his right eye almost piercing through the back of his head.

According to reports from the Medics who brought him to the hospital the young man was alert, and awake when he arrived.

According to ABC News firefighters had to use a hydraulic cutter to clip the steal spear, so that  the boy could fit into a CT Scanner.

“The tip, it didn’t penetrate the skin but you could feel underneath the skin on the back of his head so we knew that it went all the way through,” said Dr. George Garcia, an assistant professor of surgery at the Army Trauma Training Center who treated Lopez.

Doctors say, that usually an accident involving a spear is typically fatal, if the object is removed by people other than Medical personell.

Miraculously, the spear avoided all of his major blood vessels, and he  is expected to make almost a full recovery.
