Four tons of African ivory was found in Hong Kong this week, where authorities have confiscated $26.7 million worth of ivory that was found in two shipping containers.
According to CNN, Hong Kong officials have discovered and retained four tons of African ivory that was found in two separate shipping containers earlier this week. The ivory, in all of its illegality, is one of the biggest seizures of ivory in Hong Kong as it weighed over 8,000 pounds and has a worth of $26.7 million.
Hong Kong custom officials state that the origin of the ivory came from Tanzania and Kenya. They also went on to explain how they captured 1,209 pieces of ivory tusks and three pounds of ivory ornaments from the illegal shipments. Hong Kong authorities were able to discover this massive amount of illegal ivory after a tip-off from Guangdong officials in China. Hong Kong officials then examined a container from Tanzania that claimed to carry plastic scrap. Officials were shocked to find $13.5 million worth of ivory. The next day, they examined another container from Kenya that was holding ivory valued at $13.2 million.
The investigation has, so far, seen seven people get arrested, including a resident in Hong Kong.
