Government Shutdown Of Google Web Sites
The word censorship is on the lips of many Americans these days, spying and controlling what we see and what we cannot see sounds almost like a novel, but reality does make the best fiction, as the saying goes. With the Freedom of Information Act in place since 1967 it would seem that transparency in our government has been assured. The World Wide Web has made it possible for anybody to research anything, be it as a hobbyist or as a professional; with Google, information is at all of our fingertips worldwide, right?
Censorship Is The Price Of Freedom
Governments has always favored the “ignorance is bliss” approach towards the release of information to the general public. When it comes to national security, it is probably best to trust the experts about what is destructive or counter-productive use or sharing of information on the internet. Google has been picked on relentlessly by the FTC and after countless exhausting investigations and disputes with the Federal Government, succumbed to the pressure of government shutdown by closing or blacklisting over 11 million websites.
Google vs. G-Men
As Americans we are supposed to be believe that this is for our own good, so perhaps this auto-filtering of information by the FTC is not so surprising. What is shocking, however, is that the sites that were targeted were free sub domains with the co.cc extension, which happen to be heavily populated with registrants preferring the cc domain as an acronym for Christian Church or Catholic Church. Incidentally, it is commonly known that in some Islamic Nations religion is heavily censored and this web sub domain has been the only way for certain religious sects to communicate with each other, on a public platform no less.
Controlling thoughts and beliefs and spying on your citizens are traits that the Russians have historically attempted to perfect. Ironically, the premier religious leader, Russia’s Patriarch Kirill, commented that the Obama administration is motivated in support of “radical Muslim elements” as the “true reason” behind the government shutdown and not due to sites being “spammy or of “low quality”, as the administration claims. Perhaps some lessons in ‘glastnost’ are in order for President Obama during talks with Putin on his trip to London for the G8 summit.
