Holland Island was originally settled in the 1600′s, taking its name from early colonist Daniel Holland, the original purchaser of the property from the Dorchester County Sheriff. The once prosperous 275-acre Holland Island, was a wonderful town, home to a fishing community of 250 to 360 people, with more than 60 homes, a church and other buildings.
Erosion from rain fall and tide eventually ate away at the island. Today the island is now almost completely under water in the Chesapeake Bay.
This documentary was made by Grayson Middleton for the national history day competition. Grayson won $150 dollars and was publicly recognized for excellence in historic preservation.
