Is there a meningitis outbreak? The CDC is coordinating a multistate investigation of meningitis among patients who received epidural steroid injections (medication injected into the spine).

Officials have reported that the death toll of spinal meningitis has risen to seven, with 65 cases now reported in nine states.

The recent outbreak has reported several patients who have had strokes related to the meningitis. In several patients, the meningitis was found to be caused by a fungus that is common in the environment but rarely causes meningitis.

The latest two deaths were reported on Saturday in Michigan, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The latest cases have been confirmed in Minnesota and Ohio. For more information on the Spinal Meningitis outbreak head over to the Center For Disease Controls homepage.
