According to the Daily Mail, two children, aged three and two, have died from apparent heat stroke after being left in a locked car for more than an hour. The children’s mother, 25-year-old Samantha Harper, admitted to putting the children in the car and then falling asleep inside her house. Three-year-old Daniel Marise and her two-year-old sister Savannah were found dead by their mother hours later, when she found them unresponsive in the car parked outside her home in Smyrna, Tennessee.

When authorities investigated the incident, they found Harper’s home to be in deplorable conditions and since the incident, the house has been condemned by health officials and boarded up. Police arrived on the scene to find the children lying on the ground next to the car.

According to Smyrna police spokesman Sgt. Bobby Gibson, “We are going to follow every lead that we [get]. We are going to speak to everyone that we can that had knowledge of the children [and the] conditions of the home. It’s hard to imagine that people would allow themselves to live in the conditions this house was in.”

While the incident appears to be an accident, as so far, authorities have not stated that Harper was under any influence of drugs, the gravity of the event has effected the entire community. According to Harper’s aunt Estella Ship, “I just know her and I know her mother, and she wouldn’t do that, she wanted babies every since she was a baby.” However, Teresa Alrodhni disagrees as she said, “It’s really sad and I don’t know how any parent could let their kid get into that situation and do that to their kid.”

Harper is in custody until her hearing on August 9, 2012.
