To summarize John Maxwell, there are several laws of leadership that have to be fulfilled to be a successful leader. It is these characteristics that inspire people and make them want to follow you.
Since we are entering an election year, it’s time, as Nick Bakay puts it, to go to the tale of the tape and see how Barack Obama stacks up.
Leadership Ability – Leadership ability limits effectiveness. The more ability you have; the more effective you can be.
Prior to being elected, Joe Biden, Obama’s vice-presidential nominee, made the following statement about Obama in 2008.
“Mark my words…it will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama.”
So, there you have it – before Obama was even elected, his vice-president said the world would call Obama’s leadership ability into question. He even went as a far as to set a timetable. This is something that should have raised numerous red flags, but amazingly it didn’t.
It only gets worse.
To support that statement by Biden, the world did indeed test Obama and has done so ever since. According to an ABC News article,
“The pace and number of attempted terror attacks against the U.S. over the past nine months has surpassed the number of attempts during any previous one-year period…”
But, it hasn’t been just the terrorists who have questioned Obama’s leadership ability. Other countries such as Iran and North Korea have done so with impunity regarding their desire to obtain nuclear capabilities.
It was a clear case of saber rattling and Ahmadinejad called him on it by referring to Obama as an “…inexperienced and amateur politician.”
(Referring to North Korea) “We’re not interested in just going through the motions with the same result,” Obama said.
Obama’s lack of leadership has caused violence to spread throughout the Middle East as people looked to him for direction — which he provided none. It got to the point that French President Sarkozy decided to do something about the crackdown against the Libyan rebels. (Obama got a lesson on leadership from France, of all countries).
That region is now a powder keg waiting for a spark to set if off – which will come when Israel defends itself from a nuclear Iran; even though Netanyahu has asked Obama to issue a military “threat” against Iran according to an Associated Press article.
However, his inability to lead is not limited to foreign policy. He is more interested in being the celebrity president as opposed to actually governing the country he was elected to lead. Let’s look at two issues certain to be cornerstones for the upcoming presidential election:
Immigration Reform: 46 state legislatures and the District of Columbia enacted 208 laws and adopted 138 resolutions, for a total of 346. It seems that the people disagree with the Obama Administration when they say that the border is as secure as it has ever been.
Obamacare: Numerous states have challenged the constitutionality of the law while the Obama Administration issues numerous waivers to unions and others. (Note: It is to be argued before the Supreme Court next month).
As for the economy, which will be the main issue for this election, Obama said that “the stimulus” would be the cure-all for getting a struggling economy back on track. He and his administration have gone so far as to claim that the stimulus created more than 3 million jobs for unemployed Americans.
How effective has Obama been?
- Unemployment is still above 8% and is projected to be between 6.8% and 7.7% by the end of 2014.
- The price of gas has dramatically increased and Obama is focused on alternative sources of energy as opposed to doing anything about lowering prices. Even Bill Clinton is on record as saying that the U.S. should embrace the Keystone XL pipeline project.
- Numerous companies that received bailouts from Obama have now gone bankrupt, laid off workers, or have asked for additional bailout funds.
Despite the Summer of Recovery Tour, the economy is still flailing. We should hold Obama to his own standard:
“(If economy doesn’t turn around) in three years…going to be a one-term proposition…”
So, as you can clearly see, Obama has been a colossal failure at everything he has done. We should have realized it when his only prior “leadership experience” was as a community organizer which required no tangible results to earn that label.
Disadvantage: The United States
