Photograph of John Unger and his dog Shoep by Hannah Stonehouse Hudson, owner of Stonehouse Photography.

Wisconsin dog owner John Unger, and his dog Shoep are photographed in Lake Superior, as John helps put Shoep to sleep to ease his arthritis. Shoep is 19 years old and has trouble sleeping, because of his joint pains.

When John found out that water can help dogs cope with joint pain he began taking Shoep to the water to help put him to sleep.

In an email sent to Huffington Post the photographer Hannah Stonehouse Hudson told them that the photo was a last minute decision. She later went onto say that when she shared the photo on Facebook it received over 200,000 likes, and 116,000 shares.

Unger told the Duluth News Tribune that Shoep saved his life when he was suicidal after his fiance broke up with him. He said Shoep’s company helped him snap out of the downtime.

John Unger says Schoep’s Legacy Foundation has raised more than $25,000 since Unger and his dog, Schoep were originally photgraphed.

Hudson says she had no idea the photo would go viral like it did. Goes to show what Social Media can do! Keep your camera’s handy!
