In a disheartening display, a tragic photo shows a grieving owner after an officer shoots her dog as her was pursuing a robbery suspect on Sunday.
Monkey was a beloved dog, and according to her owner, Delores Crochet, a great companion. According to the Daily Mail, Monkey saw her last day on Hodges Street in Lake Charles, Louisiana as officers chased teens believed to have beaten a man in a mall parking lot before stealing his car which they then abandoned. The dog was in a back yard on the street at the time when she heard the commotion and ran out through an open gate. Unfortunately, one of the officers involved in the chase thought Monkey was on the attack and proceeded to open fire on the dog.
According to Crochet, who witnessed one of the shots being fired, her neighbors informed her of the other three shots that brought her dog down. “Monkey wasn’t jumping on him or anything. Four times he shot and the bullet went in. She came and met me, walked over there and she laid down and that’s where she died.”
Crochet’s son Chris suspects that there could have been an alternative way to deal with Monkey, as “she had not ripped his clothes, she had not tried to bite him and he shot her instead of trying to use pepper spray or some non lethal force.”
Deputy Lake Charles Police Chief Mark Kraus visited the family home to investigate what happened and states that further investigation is needed in order to determine whether or not the policeman involved used his weapon appropriately.
