A San Diego Sailor returned from her 7 month deployment looking forward to seeing her 8 year old Pug-mix Bert. Unfortunately when she got home Bert was not there to greet her.
According to San Diego County Animal Services officials, the woman who left the dog was not being honest with the owner nor officers at the shelter when she dropped off the dog that she claimed was a stray.
As Emily was driving home Christa broke the news to her, that her dog had been dropped off at a shelter. The sailor whose name is Emily placed an ad on Craigslist in an effort to find him. After the ad was placed, she soon found out the dog had been euthenized. Her Cousin Christa had given the dog up just 3 weeks into Emily’s deployment.
In an interview with San Diego 10 News Emily said ”It was absolutely devastating. I can’t remember another time in my entire life that I was that heartbroken,”
She said she made an agreement with her cousin Christa, to look out for Bert in exchange for Christa’s rent. ”I was paying almost $1,300 thinking that my dog was being taken care of every month.”
Emily went to the shelter to try and find her dog, and that is when she found out her dog Bert had been put down. Bert was put down because he was confused and aggressive towards handlers. No rescue groups would take him, according to animal services in a report from utsandiego.com.
According to Christa “She knew the dog and I didn’t get along,” Christa said. “I told her the problems I had with the dog, and she never trained him. If she had trained the dog and kept in communication with me, the dog would still be here.”
Emily is looking to take her cousin to civil court over the matter.
