In a surprising report, Saudi Arabia warns they will shoot Israeli jets in an Iran attack.
According to Alakhbar English News, Saudi Arabia has threatened to shoot down any Israeli aircraft that flies over its airspace in a unilateral attack on Iran, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday. In a report issued by the Israel newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Riyad relayed its warnings to the US, who then delivered those messages on their numerous trips to the controversial country.
According to the same report, Israel officials are taking the warnings as at attempt from the US to ensure that there will not be a unilateral strike on Iran nuclear facilities by Israel. However, while Saudi Arabia gave its warning, they also stated that they would support an attack that utilizes their airspace if it was coordinated by the US.
For months Israel’s and the United States’ relationship have been strained by the possibility of a military strike against Iran, as the Israel government is in heavy consideration of a unilateral strike against the Islamic country. Yet, the warnings from Saudi Arabia and the US seem to have little effect on Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, who stated on Thursday how he seeks to add pressure on the US to act by warning that Iran’s nuclear program was becoming difficult to foresee. “It makes the Iranian issue even more urgent and (shows it is) less clear and certain that we will know everything in time about their steady progress toward military nuclear capability.”
While the controversy over Iran’s nuclear program has been escalating throughout the years, Tehran insists its program is for peaceful purposes only. Israel is currently the only Middle Eastern country that holds nuclear weapons and has not responded to calls from surrounding countries to disarm their nuclear arsenal. While Saudi Arabia has been the leader in calls for a nuclear free Middle East, Riyadh warns that if neither Israel or Iran put a stop to their nuclear programs, it may also pursue a nuclear program.
