In an event as big as the big bang theory, scientists are looking to unveil their discovery of the God Particle that will answer key questions about the origin of our universe.
According to Yahoo News, scientists working at the world’s largest atom smasher say they have enough evidence of the long-sought-after Higgs boson. The Higgs boson is essentially the God Particle that key puzzle piece in the scientific explanation of the origin of the universe. While thousands of physicists around the world have invested in this monster project, researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN for short, are expected to announce Wednesday that they have proof of its existence.
According to the scientists on the project, the Higgs boson appeared 13.7 billion years ago in the chaos of the Big Bang and turned the flying debris into what we know today as the universe that is filled with stars, planets and galaxies. By many standards, this discovery will be one of the most vital finds in history as it will confirm the standard model of physics that explains what gives mass to matter and, by extension, how the universe was formed.
Physicist Joseph Lykken of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago explained the difficulty of tracking down the Higgs boson and its significance,
“We think the Higgs boson is a manifestation of the fact that the universe is filled with a force that we haven’t been able to detect yet that gives other particles mass. It exists for a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a second, or something like that, and then falls apart into other particles.”
According to scientists, nothing we know today could exist without this particle, and now that it can be proven to be in existence, it will certainly be one of the most important moments in science history.
