A shooting at Fort Bragg Army Base in North Carolina has left one soldier dead and two others in critical condition.
The shooting happened during a unit safety brief, where soldiers were being told to have a safe Fourth of July weekend, said Fort Bragg spokesman Col. Kevin Arata.
the victim was the battalion Commander from the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, which is a reconnaissance and intelligence unit.
“We don’t yet know the reasons for the shooting, but are working with the unit and the affected families to help them through this difficult period,” Arata said.
The soldier turned the gun on himself, and has survived the self inflicted wounds. The shooter is now in custody, while he re-cooperates at an Army hospital.
This military officials say it is unclear if the handgun the enlisted soldier used in the shooting was a personal weapon or military issue.
