On Friday, South African police officials confirmed that 34 striking miners at the Lonmin platinum mine were killed when police opened fire Thursday. Another 78 more people were injured, in the bloodiest protest since the apartheid era.
The problems at the mine are caused by AMCU’s challenge of the two-decade dominance of the National Union of Mineworkers, which is closely linked to the ruling African National Congress.
