According to the Daily Mail, two inmates, 24-year-old Sidney da Cruz and 18-year-old Carlos Pereira, tried to escape from a Brazilian prison by disguising themselves as bags of garbage to be put out by prison guards. The two prisoners were hoping to be picked up by staffers and thrown outside of the Delegacia de Furtos jail.

Unfortunately for the pair, a prison guard noticed the trash bags shaking and their plans were spoiled. The dynamic duo, who are serving time for grand theft auto, climbed into the plastic brown bags and strategically lined themselves next to the other bags in a corridor that were meant for collection. Their plan came to an end when prison guard Cleverson Mineiro saw the bags moving, “I was walking past the sacks of rubbish and I noticed something moving. At first I thought there was a rat, but on closer inspection I could see it was two inmates disguised as bags.”

The men obviously did not think the whole plan through as police chief Gerson Alves Machado points out, “I don’t know how they expected someone to pick them up and carry them away. These are grown men and the bags are made of thin plastic.”

There is now an inquiry into how the prisoners got a hold of the plastic bags. Moreover, both of the men may face an extended amount of jail time for their attempted escape.
