The man who killed 77 people in Norway Rampage declared Sane and gets incredibly short sentence

The man who went on a killing rampage in Norway has been declared sane, and sentenced to a 21 years in prison for his crime. Anders Behring Breivik, the man who killed 77 people in a bomb attack and gun rampage just over a year ago.

A Norwegian court, has sentenced him to a mere 21 years in prison for the rampage and horror he inflicted on Oslo and Utoya Island on July 22, 2011.

Brevik who is pleased to have been found sane for his attacks because he wants to be seen as a person who took a stance against multiculturalism in Norway. He said he acted out in the way that he did because he wants to stop the spread of Islam into his country.

Brevik was sentenced to the maximum possible term of 21 years and was ordered to serve a minimum of 10 years in prison, with time served counting towards his time in prison. In the United States a crime like this would almost certainly mean life in prison, and more than likely death penalty in many states.

21 years is not an ‘incredibly short’ sentence by any stretch of the imagination. Comparing Norwegian law to the American system is just silly.

  That’s incredibly short IMO when you kill 77 people. Not even a year per person. Come on now. For ever family he stole a loved one from. This is very short.

    a year per person? i didn’t know that’s how we calculated sentences. after 21 years in prison his life is going to be ruined, that’s what people want isn’t it? noone should have a say in the length of his sentence apart from those who know exactly what it’s like to spend that amount of time incarcerated.

      I too believe it is a bit short, I think he should remain jailed for the remaining of his life he has proved that he is dangerous and to be perfectly honest he is a waste of resources for the Norwegian state its going to cost millions to maintain him confined in jail. Personally i feel like he deserves death, but doubt that’s going to happen. The only good thing is that I wasn’t aware of the unlimited 5 year extension possibility on his sentence that was mentioned my Magnus at list that gives me some peace of mind and hope that he will remain incarcerated in jail for ever!!! Because these gives a green light to extremists. A Sentence as short as 21 years is as good as nothing for some demented individuals that would something as crazy and inhuman as the man above did. Just wanna say this is all my personal opinion nothing else.

21 years is an insult to the families of his victims. He should be put in prison for the rest of his life & someone like him should be sentenced to death as there’s a place in Hell waiting for him oneday.

Sickening. He should rot in jail. The hate in this world is truly the injustice. Hate and discrimination is not what God wants. God bless the victims and their families. May the victims souls be in a better place than here.

I hope you’ll bear with me despite my less-than-perfect English: It is neither my first nor second language:
I’m a Norwegian law student. I’ve even been present for the closing arguments during the trial, and this article is incredibly inaccurate.

He was not sentenced to regular prison, but to special detention. When his sentence has been served, the court may extend it for five years, providing he is still considered dangerous. This can be done an infinite number of times, effectively giving Breivik a life sentence.

A man who kills 77 people and is declared sane will always be considered dangerous. The Norwegian people knows this, hence the complete lack of outrage against his sentence.

Furthermore. We have a rate of recidivism of just 20% – compared to your 60%. Your murder rate is about eight times higher than the Norwegian one with not a single state having a lower one – and keep in mind that most of our murderes are released and theoretically able to kill again. The balance between revenge and rehabiliation is simply a matter of pro and cons, but at least the focus on rehabiliation is keeping violent crimes at an incredibly low rate.

I am actually in favor of raising the maximum sentence in Norway, but the angle chosen by the autho either deliberately or negligently makes it seem like we’re a bunch of arch-liberal, naive, polar bear-hugging hippies with no understanding of criminals what so ever. If that were true, we’d probably not have the second lowest murder rate in the Western world. Behind Iceland, by the way, a culture almost identical to ours.

I am not trying to bash the US by saying this, I am myself very pro-American, but some common sense would be much appreciated.

in my country (Romania) if someone stole a candy he go in jail for 7 years ….so sad that things like this happens around us …:( GOD bless the fam of the victims
