Last night, October 14 2012, the Season 3 premiere of The Walking Dead aired on AMC with much fanfare. Fans all around the world waited nearly a year for The Walking Dead Season 3 premiere, and it came to us just in time for Halloween.
The Walking Dead is a post apocalyptic zombie survival television series based on the graphic novels by the same name. So far in the past two seasons we have seen characters come and go, which is unusual for a television series, and this gives us the sense that no one is immune to the carnage that unfolds. The drama takes place in the state of Georgia, where most of the filming also takes place. Here in Georgia, the group of survivors that we follow must fight for their lives against a massive zombie horde as well as militant vigilantes.
In season one we saw the group unite, after spending much of their time battling their way in and out of the city of Atlanta. We followed the main character, Rick, through his trials of getting out of the city alive and surprisingly being reunited with his wife and son. In the end of the season they locate the Center for Disease Control and think they have found salvation. What they did find there was a fortified laboratory run by a lonely and hopeless scientist who has concluded that humanity is doomed to the infection of the zombies. The scientist destroys the CDC and himself in a self-destruct sequence that annihilates the building, nearly taking the entire cast with it.
In season two most of the events centered around a farm house location, where the team searches fruitlessly for a lost girl. Here at the farm house they meet a kind old gentleman who also happens to be a veternarian, and he helps the group out with medical issues. The team discovers a gruesome truth while staying at the farm, and the old man ends up being a zombie hoarder. While he has good intentions, the group sees to it that the zombies are quickly destroyed but more eventually arrive and overrun the farm house. At the end of the season the team must flee the farm and they head off into the wilderness together.
Now that season three has begun, the team stumbles upon a prison which is infested with zombies. Rick, the leader, decides that the prison may be their best hope at defending themselves and he devises a plan for them to take out the zombies in smaller groups. Lori, Rick’s wife is pregnant and about to deliver her baby but the prison is still not secure enough. The men run about the prison fighting all kinds of zombies, from depraved inmates all the way up to armored guards in full riot gear who have also become infected. While prisons may be designed to keep people in, they are also equally guarded against keeping people out. This prison may be the best chance for our group, if only they can survive long enough to clear it out. Right at the end of the episode the doctor gets bit by a zombie, and a group of uninfected prisoners happens upon the men right as Rick is forced to make a rash decision to amputate the doctors leg.
Will the doctor live long enough to help deliver Rick and Lori’s baby? Are the prisoners going to be good or bad for the group? And let’s not forget the katana wielding woman who just showed up on the scene with two jawless and armless zombies chained to her waist!
