If you live anywhere near one of these cities, count your blessings, and lock your doors. Below we have included the top 10 dangerous US cities with some other demographic information. Included are the total city population, and the percentage of major races in the city population according to the 2010 US Census. On the Right-hand side you will see the Median Income for the city listed as well.

Here are the top 10 most dangerous cities in America (listed in order):

Worked renovating an RCA(Camden) building into apartments in the 60′s. I couldn’t believe the amount of empty shell casing that were underfoot. A sign of things to come.

  Being from Camden County NJ, my father was looking for apartments in the late 80′s after splitting from my mom and one of the apartments he was shown still had blood on the walls from a homicide. The apartment personell was mistakenly told that it had been cleaned already.
  
  This article isn’t ranking the cities as dangerous because of their racial makeup, those are just some of the demographics (Population, racial profile, median income) I guess it would be helpful too to see current unemployment rates, high school drop-out rates, and some other stats.
  
  I was reading a study about violence in America and found it interesting that African Americans nationally were 630% more likely to be the killer in a homicide than the average. And the average included those homicides by African Americans, so if they were removed from the other statistics and compared the rate would be much higher. And they are almost just as likely to be a victim of homicide as well.
  
  African Americans are not to blame for the statistics by any means, it really stems from a grouping of social and economic factors that effect their communities disproportionately higher than other communities. Any racial group in the se situations would probably be just as prone to crime and violence as a norm.

They need to get better statistics most of these cities shouldn’t be in the top 10. Oakland, CA has the highest theft and robbery rates in the country and the has 126 murders in 2012 with a population of 390,000. Chicago has 3 million citizens how could it be the murder Capitol if the murder rate is way higher there in Oakland?

  Exactly, I just looked at it and Chicago would have almost 1,500 murders with Oakland’s murder rate. Some people obviously have no clue when it comes to murder rates. 3 million residents and 500 murders is small scale to 390,000 residents and 192 murders.

Race is not the common denominator. Economics is. The dangerous cities have the lowest salaries, which therefore indicates lack of education, opportunity and resources. Black people are not inherently dangerous ignorant sh*t.

  Chicago may have had the most murders but certainly didn’t have the highest murder rate. 500 murders in a city of 3 million, yet Detroit has 700,000 people and had 400 murders, Oakland has 390,000 people and had 192 murders. Chicago is four times the size of Detroit, so if Detroit had Chicago’s population they would have had 1,600 murders in 2012; Oakland would have had about 1,500 murders so why is it that you think Chicago has the highest murder rate when I just named two cities that have a higher murder rate?

And most of these cities have corrupt governments especially Detroit so race shouldnt be a factor. tomkat i am from Camden i am sitting in Camden right this second born and raised i am a engineer i work down the street from that rca building haven’t seen shell casings ever one of the reason Camden is so bad is because we sit next to Philly and the towns that surround us all come to buy their drugs we read the paper about somebody from a city close by making a wrong turn and getting shot really wrong turn in Camden yeah right

    Exactly, While Chicago is notorious for a high number of murders, that is only one aspect of violent crime as a whole. Violent crime takes into account armed robbery, forceable rape, assaults, home invasions, etc.

  I was born and raised in camden. It’s a really small place everybody knows everybody if something goes down even tho they seen what happened you know for sure they will find you and merk you. So in the of the day half the town kills and gets away with it. The police quit on camden. It’s so sad to see my ppl and town get degraded with out knowing the facts of why things happen the way they do…. Everyone is family where I come from. There was a time many years ago when White America had it’s chance to “Assimilate” those it had put into slavery, poverty, and illiterate state. But nooo..segregation, bigotry ,racism and mythical superiority was allowed to take hold even til this very day with those who oppose Affirmative Action. This attitude speaks and manifest itself through the numbers listed above. Educate and give fair opportunities to a race of people and they will overcome violence, ignorance, poverty and work to preserve a better quality of life. Ostracize them, limit dreams and opportunity and life becomes devalued and criminal intents become the norm.

Chicago isn’t even close to being the most dangerous city in the country. Just because there is crime here doesn’t make it dishonorable mention. Chicago is a great city and most of the city doesn’t have the crime problems that people think it does, 75% of the crimes in Chicago happen in 20 neighborhoods spread across the south and west sides. Is it really fair to the rest of the city to call Chicago a dangerous city? I don’t think so because crime happens anywhere. Downtown is almost completely safe, many of the Northside neighborhoods are safe, some of the Southside neighborhoods are safe, if you don’t know what you are talking about then don’t write this. The cities that are in the top ten deserve to be there because they are dangerous, Chicago doesn’t even come close to being with those cities. Before anyone starts talking about 500 murders lets take a look at this now, Chicago is the largest city of any city in the top ten most dangerous cities, all of these cities have higher crime rates per capita than Chicago does. Wow the third largest city in the nation had 500 murders, stop acting as if that is some kind of record for Chicago because it isn’t.

    At 60.6 homicides per 100,000 Camden had the highest reported rate of any city over 40,000 people in 2011. If it were the size of Chicago, Camden would have over 1500 murders to Chicago’s 506.

  Not only is it not a record (Chicago had 970 murders in 1974, much more than the 506 last year) but Chicago’s per capita murder rate is way below New Orleans, Detroit, St. Louis or even towns like Ft. Myers Florida and York Pennsylvania that nobody ever mentions.

Only two cities that I mentioned here have lower murder rates than Chicago does, every other city on this list has a higher murder rate. The only two cities that are lower are Cleveland which is basically the same murder rate as Chicago and Memphis. New Orleans has the highest murder rate in the nation, not Chicago. Funny that I just named eight cities with higher murder rates than Chicago, I could keep going if I wanted to.

being from st. louis, i’m surprised we weren’t higher on the list. and you have to consider that they’re including (for us, anyway) not just st. louis city, but st. louis county and the surrounding areas. the population for the city itself is only 320,000 – add in north and south county areas,, west county and most often east st. louis (which is actually across the river in illinois!) and there you have the stats.east st. louis has an incredibly corrupt police and legislative system, north county is poor and predominately black (not racist, simply a fact), and south county has an ever increasing meth industry. all of these factors are what make up these ‘most dangerous’ lists, it’s not just about murder rates, it’s not just about race, it’s not just about the socio-economic climate – it’s everything rolled into one.
