The first American shipment in 50 years arrives in Cuba full of humanitarian aid from Miami.
The shipment which arrived Friday carried family goods, food, medicine and clothing, as well as medical equipment such as orthopedic mattresses and electric wheelchairs.
The historic event has not been documented by the press in Cuba. Wilfredo O’Farril said “It’s not in the press. I heard about it from other people. They said it arrived the day before yesterday, I think, a yacht or a ship with aid,” O’Farril said. “Some packages from people in Miami that were authorized to send them to Cuba. We hope this continues, for the benefit of the people.”
President Barack Obama has somewhat eased the embargo, lifting some travel restrictions and allowing Cuban Americans to send unlimited remittances back home.
The shipping company behind the Miami shipment hopes it will become a weekly fixture. It has been granted a licence by the United States government, which has imposed a trade embargo against Cuba since 1962.
