White phosphorus is an incendiary weapon, that burns fiercely and can set cloth, fuel, ammunition and other combustibles on fire, and cause serious burns or death.
White phosphorus can cause injuries and even death in three ways. By burning deep through the tissue to the bone, by being inhaled as a smoke, and by being ingested. Extensive exposure by burning and ingestion is fatal.
Using white phosphorus has been outlawed according to international law for use against civilians and military. As you will see a violation of international law has just occurred in Homs, Syria.
