As an adult adoptee, I find it disgusting how adoptees are treating as if we are betraying our adoptive parents by seeking to find or reuniting with our natural parents. It is utterly ridiculous. The reality is that most adoptees have 4 real parents. We were not given a choice to lose the first two from our lives. It’s our right to know who are biological families are. We don’t need people judging us and dictating to us. We are not lesser human beings and we are fully capable of being the captains of our own ships, thank you very much. Colin’s natural mother is reaching out to him. He may or may not choose to make a connection with her. But whether he does or not, it’s nobody else’s business.

Like MaraR, I’m also an adoptee who thinks it’s ridiculous how members of the so-called adoption “triad” are portrayed. State laws were written to erase the adoptee’s identity and replace it with one that is “as if born to” the adoptive parents – even in step parent adoptions.

I remember an era when a divorced father was expected to quietly disappear from the lives of his children when his wife remarried. Step father adopts them and their biological father is erased. Why? Because, back then, the public shouldn’t know that Little Billy came from a “broken home”. Same reason for keeping other adoptions secret (sometimes even from the adoptee) – adoption erased the stigma of illegitimacy.

So now the trend is for more openness – even if the laws haven’t caught up with the new reality. But still the stereotypes linger.

- The “fallen woman” who doesn’t deserve to know the child she bore and then relinquished. She’s lauded for her “sacrifice” and her “gift” – as long as she doesn’t interfere with the “real” parents.

- The “ungrateful” adoptee who isn’t satisfied with his (obviously superior) replacement parents and just wants what everyone else seems to have – knowledge of his original identity and family history. If he does well in life, credit the adoptive parents. If he does poorly, well, they did their best but couldn’t overcome the (obviously inferior) genetics.

- The adoptive parents who “couldn’t have real children” and are in deep denial over the fact that their (adopted) child has another family.

I wonder, does this author have the same attitude about grown children who get married and call their in-laws “mom” and “dad?” Is it a sin to have more people in one’s life to love and be loved by? I, for one, think that if an adopted individual feels a need to know who and where they come from, it should be encouraged, not shamed. And if an adopted person chooses not to, they should also be respected, not judged or lauded as some sort of example with which to compare the rest. What any adult decides to do in regards to their personal relationships is their own business. I would hate to think of how this author would feel if somebody decided to pick apart why she has the friends she does, and dare to accuse her of some sort of crime for loving (or not loving) anyone she chooses.

Treasonous? Wanting to know your biological heritage is hardly treasonous and only someone who grew up knowing it and taking it for granted would say such a thing. It is possible to have room in your life for more than one set of parental figures – anyone with step parents they love or aunts & uncles who are active in their lives would know that. Sarah Rasheed, your conclusion about Colin’s parents is spurious.
