With Michael Christian pretending to be Prince Charles and Mel Christian pretending to be Queen Elizabeth, Jacintha Saldanha, who was working as a receptionist that day, was fooled by their accents and patched them through to another nurse, who divulged that Kate Middleton was stable at the moment” after “retching” from a nasty case of hyperemesis gravidarum.

“We thought we’d be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents. We’re very sorry if we’ve caused any issues for Kate or the nurse. It was honestly meant as fun and I do hope the nurse and Kate are OK.”

While the hospital did not come out and clearly state why did Jacintha Saldanha kill herself, they released a statement expressing their grievances over the loss of a great nurse:

“It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha,” the statement read. “Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII’s Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues.

“We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time.”

  I can’t see this – by “crucified” I guess you mean disrespected, etc, but we’re not hearing that about the nurse who actually gave out information (though maybe the suicide put a damper on that). Also, there was no secret or embarrassing information given out about Kate – just routine stuff saying she’s doing okay – which some would really like to hear, considering Kate had been having some problems with first pregnancy.

      If, word for word, this is what came out about my wife’s/mother’s condition, I wouldn’t care much. If it was revealed that she had AIDS or something, I’d be upset, but not enough to wish the person who said it was dead. And I thought I’d read reports on Kate’s condition (in news articles) before this came out – the info that came out was known. Which is why I’m thinking she killed herself because of something else.

Why would she have been crucified? She made a mistake. She transferred a hoax phone call. She was not even the nurse that gave out the personal information. She was tricked, recorded without her permission, broadcasted world wide, humiliated and degraded. I do not believe that she was not disciplined by the hospital, and I do not believe that the royals did not complain. As a nurse with years of exp, I know how hospitals and VIP’s work. The Australian DJ’s should be ashamed of themselves. How do we know she killed herself? Just because they tell us she committed suicide before starting an investigation? Also, why would she kill herself on her way to work? In fact, how did she kill herself? I suggest you google the place where she was apparently found. Why would you kill yourself in the middle of the road?   I suggest one googles the place she was from rather. 20% of the world’s suicides occur in India, and the ratio of suicides between Northern and Southern India, where Jacintha was from until just ten years ago, is 3 to 11. Most are the result of “humiliation”. No one wants to chalk this up to cultural influence. No one wants to consider that it is even worse as honor killings in India are often disguised as suicides stemming from humiliation.

    Exactly! This lady is not like the majority of Indian women who commit suicide. She seems to be well-educated and apparently very good at her job. From what is known about her family background in Mangalore, she does not seem to be from a culture where personal and family honour is highly esteemed. She has a husband and two children. While the prank call was extremely thoughtless, Jacintha Saldanha just doesn’t seem like a woman who would kill herself over it. I think explaining her suicide (if it is a suicide) as cultural is rather simplistic and a tad insulting. I think something is just suspicious about the whole incident.

This is incredible sad, but those radio DJ’s did nothing wrong. They were just doing their jobs – entertaining the public. Like he said, their accents were horrible and he thought they’d be hung up on as soon as they were put through. As horrible as this sounds, it’s the nurse’s own sensitivity to blame for this whole mess. It’s horrible that she felt she needed to end her life in lieu of the Royal pressures they must put on those poor people. Royalty is nothing but manmade BULLSHIT.

  From my studies of foreign languages, and speaking with people from other nationalities, you have actually got to know a language very well in order to pick an accent. I was unaware of this until only recently, when I was speaking to my language teacher who is not a native English speaker, but who speaker English perfectly. She told me that she could not pick different English accents. On my travels in Europe, where many people speak English perfectly as a 2nd language, I asked them if they could pick English accents, and almost all said they could not. In other words, even if you speak English perfectly as a 2nd language, you probably cannot pick different accents. Hence, for Saldanha, there was no way she would have been able to pick that the DJ’s accent was not that of the Queen’s English. The DJ’s lied that they were the Queen and Prince Phillip, and in a split second, Saldanha had to either believe them or not. Before you judge, imagine how you would react if this telephone conversation happened, in a language not your first language.
  
  To reinforce the point, my experience with people in Europe is that the person, who’s not a native speaker, can speak English absolutely perfectly, as many Europeans can, but my anecdotal experience is that such fluent speakers cannot readily distinguish accents.

I’m sorry when anyone commits suicide (unless a criminal), but this wasn’t such a big deal. If anyone should feel bad, it’s the DJs and the nurse who actually gave details. Jacintha was just a nurse – she was not someone whose job it was to screen calls. The same thing happened to Sarah Palin (when “sarkozy” called her), and even with her thin skin, Palin brushed it off. There must have been something else in this woman’s background to explain this (culture related??). It’s hard to imagine the hospital not reprimanding her, even though they said they didn’t, but maybe the unnamed 2nd nurse who DID give details got lambasted and Jacintha felt responsible… but that’s still no reason to kill oneself. Again, I’m sorry this woman took her life… this should have been blown off. I REALLY feel bad for young kids who take their lives after much bullying in school.

The nurse said basically nothing – apart from Kate was doing okay. This smacks of something extremely fishy here. I dunno if the Royal family would have killed her, but i bet anything the Gov (secret service) would. Just so they have another excuse to tighten media laws, so basically they eventually have full control what the media aires. Could the nurse been so upset she killed herself, maybe. But even if that happened, it is the fault of the British media and people, for making her feel so bad about it. Not some radio station, that did what they do everyday around the world.   “The nurse” you speak of would be the (unnamed) second nurse – Jacintha only passed the phone to her, she didn’t say anything about Kate. I don’t think the Royal family would ‘snub’ out someone over this – I think Charles even got a chuckle out of it (until news of the suicide came out). I’m curious about Jacintha’s home life, her culture (Japanese have been known to suicide over some things, but I’ve not heard the same about India culture), had she been depressed lately, etc – I COULD see this as the last straw if someone was down to start with, but it WAS a joke, and would have been nothing (except a report on Kate) had the suicide not occured.

      Thank you for posting – I didn’t think suicide was in India culture, but it is too common for murder (husband/wife) though I hope it’s not this. I agree with “a” above that we don’t know what killed her (I assumed pills), where she was found (was on her way to work, in middle of the street), there was no suicide note (not mentioned anyway), etc. So there is more to this. This is not horrific like the nanny who killed those two children in NYC (then tried to kill herself), but much came out on that nanny’s background later.

I’m American and did find this funny, but wouldn’t if something very personal been revealed about Kate (as other poster said, the information was nothing more than given from several news outlets). To start with, to clear up the confusion about the first nurses involvement in the breach of hospital confidentiality, she was the one who authorised and transferred the call through to the department where the duchess was being treated, the second nurse involved in the phone call had no way of knowing that the pranksters would be able to get through to her phone line so easily without going through proper security measures as this is No ordinary NHS hospital, and after all who would withhold information from the queen when asked by the lady her self, lets face it the breach lies with the nurse who originally put the call through. Now regarding the suicide situation, there is no way that the police could rule out suspicious circumstances and claim this was a suicide before their had even been an investigation or a autopsy done on the body and also why would a person would be heading to work and commit suicide half way through their journey without leaving a suicide note, it just doesn’t make sense. So the question everybody is asking, why would anybody want her dead? Their are a many reasons, but I believe the reason for this is so the government can gain more control over what the media are saying in the news papers, airing on national television and over the radio, basically an excuse so they can tighten the laws on media broadcasts, because the media (that they don’t already control) are the only line of defence that ordinary people have against the government. I think she got dissed bad by the management at the hospital and made fun of by fellow employees. This can in a lot of times be more devastating than what is happening in the outside world. There should be an inquiry into what happened in the hospital following the prank call till the time of death. The husband probably knows but they probably shut him up. Its easy to blame the DJs but I wouldn’t till I know what happened inside the hospital in the aftermath of the prank.

After listening to the call, it certainly did not reveal anything of a personal nature, just the she was sleeping and not throwing up. I imagine the DJ’s were surprised they could get through so easily so had to come up with a conversation.. Perhaps the nurse had other issues going on, Sad in any case.

If Jacintha did kill herself over this, then I’d submit that culturally speaking, she was very backwards. That is, it is easy to explain or excuse her actions as being “cultural” in nature, but that doesn’t make them acceptable, worldwide. And if her actions are excusable, from a cultural POV, then what else can one say…she “screwed up,” and was justified in taking her own life. seriously she wasnt the one who divulged the info, she only put the call through. So I really dont see why she would feel guilty at all. More investigation into the incident is required, people seem too easy to accept that she committed suicide. The hospital should have had some protocols/procedures to deal with calls of this kind, which as the dj’s said, were expected. Personally I think it was more the backlash from the media about the ‘scandal’ than the actual scandal, but I hesitate on saying her death was the result of suicide.
