A 29-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl in a jail house after being detained for being high on meth and drunk. The unidentified woman was arrested for disorderly conduct and also for suspicion of being drunk while being pregnant around 2:00 p.m on Sunday.

Thanks to a quick thinking Santa Cruz County Jail office staff the newborn baby was resuscitated after the woman gave birth on a jailhouse floor following her arrest for being drunk and high on methamphetamine.

She was being escorted out of the Santa Cruz jail house lobby around 1:30 a.m. Monday when she suddenly went into labor three months premature. Following the birth the baby stopped breathing while the jail staff waited for emergency response units to arrive.

The mother and baby girl were rushed to Dominican Hospital for observation. Sgt. Steve Carney said due to the circumstances he believes the newborn will be placed into child protective services.
