Missouri native Joy McDonald will be facing jail time as her two pet chihuahuas, Peaches and Domino, caused the hen to have a heart attack. According to the Huffington Post, the hen’s untimely death occurred on April 5, and belonged to McDonald’s neighbors, George and Nittaya Gamblin, who keep chickens as pets at their Missouri home east of Kansas City. While McDonald’s dogs are often locked indoors, the dogs were found in the chicken’s coup on the Gamblin’s property where the chicken murder took place.
Studying to become a veterinarian, MacDonald believes the penned bird suffered a heart attack when the Chihuahuas barked at it while running loose in the rural neighborhood. McDonald faces charges of misdemeanor animal abuse as the court records say the dogs killed the chicken but don’t explain how.
According to Lafayette County Prosecutor Kellie Wingate Campbell, the scene was pretty horrific as “There are photos with a poor dead chicken and feathers everywhere.” If McDonald is found guilty, she could face jail time of up to a year and pay a fine of $1,000.
The fact that McDonald can face jail time for the incident has intrigued many and made this a case to watch. However, McDonald finds the whole situation ridiculous as she stated “I think this is asinine. I just can’t wrap my mind around it. All of this because of a dead chicken.” She went on to state how the case made her feel as she told reporters, “It makes me feel like a horrible person. I just think this has blown way out of proportion. I said, ‘I was sorry.’ I tried paying for it. I built a dog pen.”
However, the Gamblins refuse to budge on the issue and intend to go forward as George Gamblin told reporters, “I don’t want to be paid for the chicken. I just want the dogs off my place and destroying our property. To me, the idea of respecting people’s property is lost in all this.”
