According to the Daily Mail, for the first time in IQ testing, psychologists have found that female scores have risen above those of men. IQ testing began over a century ago, where women use to trail behind men, in some cases by 5 points. While scientists concluded that the difference could be caused by genetics, the gap has been lessening over the years, where women are now finally on top.
According to the world-renowned authority on IQ tests, James Flynn stated, ”In the last 100 years the IQ scores of both men and women have risen but women’s have risen faster. This is a consequence of modernity. The complexity of the modern world is making our brains adapt and raising our IQ.”
While there is no solid facts as to why women have overtook men when it comes to IQ testing, Flynn speculates that the recent change may have to do with the more demanding workload modern women have today as they multitask between raising a family and having a job. Another explanation may have to do with women having a slightly higher potential intelligence than men and are only now realizing it.
Whatever the explanation, Flynn states that more testing is needed in order to conclude the results and reasoning behind them, “The full effect of modernity on women is only just emerging.”
The data came from all over the world from countries like the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Argentina, Estonia and other countries in Western Europe. Flynn concludes that, “as the world gets more complex, and living in it demands more abstract thought, so people are adapting. I suspect that the same trends are happening in Britain, too, although the data is too sparse to be sure.”
