Joe’s seven man team discovered the U-boat on this their second trip in two years to the site they have been scouring. The team was using side-scan sonar when they located the wreck spilled over to its side in deep water about 70 miles south of Nantucket.

In April 1944, a German U550 prowling the waters off Nantucket torpedoed an American Fuel Tanker caught straggling behind its convoy. The U-boat was hit by a depth charge from the USS Joyce that ultimately sunk the vessel.

44 German sailors aboard the German U-boat were killed, with 12 survivors. While 25 American Sailors on the Fuel Tanker were killed in the events.
